Soldiers Long Ago in Ireland
It was interesting to learn about the life of a soldier in times past. They wore a long woollen coat whatever the weather. In wet weather it was very heavy and in warm weather it was hot to wear.
Large brimmed hats were worn, not helmets as one might expect. Because armies on both sides would have looked much the same, they identified which side they belonged to with, perhaps, the sprig of a bush in their hat.
The soldiers would carry a musket with lead shot and gunpowder. Because the lead shot was poisonous, it would either have to be extracted from the body or the body part amputated!
Finally the gentleman explained how an old hand grenade worked and was used during warfare.
