Human Sundial
23rd May 2023
Today we trialled another lesson for the new key stage 2 outdoor learning resource. We worked in pairs or small groups of three and drew around our shadows every hour. We measured the shadows with a tape measure and discovered they grew shorter towards midday (as we predicted). At the same time we learnt how to use a compass to calculate the direction of our shadows in relation to the eight points of the compass and also in degrees. We found that our shadow moved from a westerly direction to a northerly direction. Unfortunately it clouded over in the afternoon so there were no shadows to measure! We hope to try again tomorrow.
