Home Learning
Dear Parents,
It is hard to believe that this is now Week 10 of no formal school! But from the emails and phonecalls we know you are all working hard to keep some work going. We fully appreciate that some of you are out working, working from home, have younger children, limited tech resources, BUT please continue to do what you can and don't stress too much!
Staff are already discussing how we can get your ["our"] kids back on track whenever school resumes and it will be a case of seeing where the children are at and teaching and consolidating basic skills to get back on an even keel.
School going forwards is going to look very different with part-time provision and online learning continuing for some time. We will be focussing on key concepts and skills to make sure they are embedded. Please do not be tempted to rush your child on as P1/2 is very much about embedding understanding and consolidation to provide a solid Foundation for further learning.
P1 pupils should be able to count to 10 forwards, backwards from different starting points and be able to add one more, one less relatively quickly.
P1 should be able to read at least 40/60 key words with quick recall and be able to use some of these words to write simple sentences. By the end of P1 they should recognise and be writing both name and surname. They should be able to spell simple 3 letter words consisting of consonant- vowel-consonant [ eg pig, can, hit].
P2 pupils should know their number bonds to 10 with quick recall [ 6 + 4, 2 + 8 etc]. They should be confident adding and subtracting within 20 including the use of missing boxes.
P2 should be able to write 3-4 sentences and self edit using VCOP High 5 to ensure capitals, fullstops, interesting words [WOW words] and different openers.
Please do not be tempted to look ahead to the next year's curriculum as your child will get confused. Focussing on the above will help Mrs Kerr and I to pick up and move on. Remember to promote independence as much as possible as we will have to learn to work in socially distanced ways.
As always we are only too happy to answer your queries and questions via email or phone.
Kind regards
Pam Lowry
