Polar Exploration Day

23rd Nov 2017

We had a great day being Polar Explorers!  We looked at how the heat of our hands melted the ice cubes and realised that the polar icecaps are melting too because of global warming. We played a game where we pretended to be polar bears swimming to the ice floes. As the floes melted and disappeared it was harder to find an ice floe to get to safety. Then we were very brave and tested how cold icy water was by counting to 10 with our hand in a bucket of ice...freezing!  Next we made a "blubber mit" and then tested our hands in the icy water wearing the mit.  We learnt that polar bears can swim in the icy water because they have a big layer of blubber to keep them warm. We had fun using the data loggers to see how cold the water really was.
